STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE:
- INTEREST IN FACILITATING AND ORGANIZING FURTHER WORKSHOPS IN THE CSSW COMMUNITY.
- PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH ANTI-OPPRESSIVE WORK SUCH AS: -ISMS LABS, SPRING UNPACKING OPPRESSION, UNDOING RACISM, OR OTHER DIALOGUES
Q: Who will be facilitating?
A: Unpacking Oppression will be facilitated by the following CSSW community members: Karma Lowe, Professor Cat Shugrue Dos Santos, Professor Kalima DeSuze, Eleni Zimiles, Luke Patterson, and Andrew Lawton.
A: Dinner and lunch will be provided. After you register, you will be contacted with your dietary needs. We hope to accommodate all individuals who are kosher, halal, vegan, vegetarian, as well as those who have other dietary restrictions.
Q: What is the purpose of this training?
A: The purpose of this training is to support the ongoing and future anti-oppressive work of students who are interested in facilitating and organizing anti-oppressive events and/or workshops for the CSSW community and beyond. We recognize the efforts of community members who actively work to apply a critical lens to issues of power, privilege and oppression, and we hope to help supply the tools to encourage dialogue. With these trainings, we hope to form a corps of students, faculty, and administrators to promote dialogue on issues of power, privilege, and oppression across barriers: in and outside of the classroom, and in the local communities in which we work and live.
Q: May I still attend if I do not have a background in anti-oppressive work?
A: If you are interested in an anti-oppressive workshop, but feel as if you do not have the experience or ability to make the commitment required for Unpacking Oppression 201, please look out for the Spring Unpacking Oppression 101 Workshop next semester.

PDSA is a program of the Associate Dean’s Office and serves as the action arm of the Diversity Committee at Columbia School of Social Work. Each week, two graduate MSW candidates meet with the Associate Dean and the executive assistant to bring relevant speakers, organize events and spaces for students and faculty of Columbia School of Social Work. The Professional Development & Self-Awareness (PDSA) group envisions a community where all CSSW students, faculty, and administrators feel safe, supported, and accountable within their individual experiences with privilege, power and oppression. PDSA programs seek to develop mechanisms by which systems of oppression that operate within CSSW are publicly recognized and openly confronted.
Mission
PDSA promotes an inclusive environment that fosters the development of self-awareness and accountability. PDSA aims to build an environment that acknowledges and challenges injustices and their many forms, while simultaneously promoting dialogue surrounding personal experience and accountability.
PDSA recognizes that forms of oppression often lead to the pain and silencing of many students, faculty and administrators. PDSA understands that there are many students, faculty and administrators that consistently work to achieve these goals, and supports these existing efforts by providing grants, administrative resources, and spaces for significant discussions and actions to occur. PDSA supports CSSW in upholding the connection between social work and social justice.
